REPUBLIC OF IRAQ – Ministry of Education Sample Test 2
Examination in English for Intermediate Schools Time: 3 Hours
Note: Answer all the questions
Reading comprehension (25 marks)
Q1. Read the following texts and complete the exercises.
A- (a) Rowing is one of the oldest activities in the world. Detailed 3000-year-old Egyptian drawings show men rowing boats down the River Nile to move people or heavy objects from one place to another. Some warriors even rowed just to show how strong they were!
(b) Modern day rowing is usually for fun, not for moving things around. People row together as a team or ‘crew’. In a full crew, there are usually eight people rowing and one extra person who guides the boat. To be a good rower, you must be very fit and you must be able to keep going even when you feel like stopping.
(c) Rowing is one of the original sports in the modern Olympic Games. Taking part in the Olympics is one of the highest honours for modern rowers. One of the world’s greatest rowers is the British athlete Steve Redgrave. He won a gold medal at five Olympic Games. Only three other people in the world have ever done this.
